1. AIMs:

Under the Industry 4.0, smart factory and manufacturing require holistic integration of smart products, tools, and services throughout the product life cycle.  With the notion of PSS (Product Service System), smart products here refer to smart products, tools, services and integral innovative manufacturing systems. Smart product/service system design is a multidisciplinary research field involving Industrial Design, Service Design, Mechanical Design, Interaction Design, User-Experience Design, Human Factors and Emotional Design to name a few.

Currently, researches into product service  system design are separated into different stages and sub-systems, the research on the integration of smart products/services with intelligent computing and manufacturing is much needed not only to concern product design, manufacturing and customer services but also to take on repurposing, reuse, costing, remanufacturing and recycling in the design stage.

Therefore, this research symposium aims to bring researchers together from different research aspects around the product/Service system design, innovation and system integration to exchange their current research, discuss better research ideas, update the state-of-the-art of the current research status, and encouraged research collaborations.

5.PUBLICATIONS

All submissions will be rigorously peer-reviewed. The peer-reviewing process will be coordinated and managed by the international committee. It is envisaged that the final accepted papers after revisions will be in two categories: Full-papers and Short-papers.

Full papers will be published in the Special Issue on “smart products through-life design-Theories, methods and tools” in the SAGE open-access journal of Advances in Mechanical Engineering (SCI-indexed, Impact factors: 0.827).

The short papers will be published in the conference proceedings as an eBook titled “Smart Product Design: Theories, Methods and Tools” with a subtitle “Proceedings of the First International Symposium on Smart Products Through-Life Design: Theories, Methods and Tools “. This eBook is free for publication, and is free for viewing and download to maximise its impact and citations. The eBook ISBN number is ISBN 9781861354761 registered in the UK.

6.PAPER SUBMISSION AND REVIEW PROCESS

Papers can be submitted through this website. As to the template, authors may follow author guide from the journal “Advances in Mechanical Engineering” at the following link: Special Issue on “smart products through-life design-Theories, methods and tools”. Publication fee is about $2000 per article.

All submissions will go through two stage reviews.

At the stage one, each submission will be initially assessed by at least one of programme committee members and the programme committee will then make a recommendation of the submission to be a full paper to a short paper candidate. The initial assessment result and feedback will be communicated back to authors.

At the stage two, a full paper candidate will be invited to make a journal paper submission to the Special Collection on Smart Products Through-Life Design: Theories, Methods and Tools via the journal’s online submission system. A full paper review for the special issue will be conducted in due course. The accepted papers will be published in the SAGE journal: Advances in Mechanical Engineering.

At the stage two, a short paper candidate will be fully reviewed with coordination from the programme committee and the accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings.
